I’ve got the domains, you’ve for the (corporate) chequebooks…
…let’s make lots of money.
Looks like dotMobi really is going ahead with its mass near-cybersquatting plan of reserving the best generic domain names and auctioning them off to the highest bidder.
dotMobi, the official worldwide registry for the .mobi domain, has announced the date for its first auction of premium names.
The first set of 10 .mobi domain names will be made available via auction at the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. East domain conference in Hollywood, Florida, on October 27, 2006.
The 10 .mobi domains to be auctioned are “celebs,” “cheaptickets,” “flowers,” “fun,” “gossip,” “hot,” “laugh,” “party,” “stockquotes” and “wow.”
In an effort to prove how pointless and unnecessary this is (unless you are running a top level domain and stand to profit from it), notMobi is now open for business.
For the low, low price of nothing up-front and no monthly payments you can now snap up the first ten .notmobi.com sub-domains.
If you fancy celebs.notmobi.com, cheaptickets.notmobi.com or any of: flowers, fun, gossip, hot, laugh, party, stockquotes or wow then leave your details in the comments below.
The following conditions apply:
1) First come, first served
2) Only one sub-domain per household
3) You must supply a mobile-optimised site to forward the sub-domain to and a brief description of the site
4) A link back to notMobi.com would be appreciated, but not required
5) The chosen name must relate to the content of your site
6) No switching the content for pr0n, spam, naughty stuff later on
7) The sub-domain may be turned off for any reason, at any time, without any legal recourse on your part
In return, providing you play by the rules, the sub-domain is yours for as long as I own notMobi.
Other terms may be added in the future.
Full release after the jump.
Full release: DOTMOBI TO SELL FIRST SET OF PREMIUM DOMAIN NAMES
October 16, 2006 – dotMobi, the official worldwide registry for the .mobi domain, has announced the date for its first auction of premium names.
The dotMobi Premium Names list is a compilation of commonly used words and phrases which dotMobi has set aside for equitable allocation as an alternate to the traditional “first come, first serve” procedure. These names will be distributed in batches through 2008 using both auction and Request for Tender (RFT) processes.
Sites built using the .mobi domain make accessing the Internet on a mobile device faster, less expensive and more reliable by offering content tailored for mobile phones. More than 150,000 .mobi domains have been registered since General Registration commenced on October 11, 2006.
“Given the strong demand for .mobi domain names, bidding at this initial auction will most likely be exciting,” said Neil Edwards, CEO of dotMobi. “We anticipate that the winning bidders of these Premium Name sites will develop relevant and useful content for mobile Internet consumers.”
Information on the initial names for the Request for Tender (RFT) process is planned to be released on November 6.
