Access 4oD through a web browser
Thursday, January 25th, 2007You don’t need to download and install the 4oD application if you just want to have a nosey around Channel 4’s new on demand download service - you can find it at the end of this web address:
http://vodapp.grid.channel4.com/c4site-web/

Despite actually living in the UK (and yes, I have checked) it won’t let me access the service though - either through the proper app or web page. It just says:
You need to be within the UK or the Republic of Ireland to download from 4oD

Prodigy and Chemical Brothers Remixed back online
Thursday, January 18th, 2007
It started, as many things do, with a drunken conversation in a pub - why don’t we round up a bunch of people to put together an unofficial remix album of the Prodigy’s Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned and release it for free download (with charity donation) on the same day as the original?
One month later Always Outsiders, Never Outdone was ready for download. Three days later, and we’d burned through our monthly bandwidth allowance and almost pulled down the server (and all the other sites on it…).
Once the dust had settled we set our sights on a sequel. After failing to get enthused by a number of new releases, a copy of the Chemical Brothers’ Push the Button fell into our lap and we had a new project: Flip the Switch. Despite better planning, we managed to bring the server down in three hours this time - going on Xfm the night before release probably didn’t help.
The albums have since slipped off the internet, but can now be found at their (hopefully permanent) new homes:
prodigy.musicremixed.org and chems.musicremixed.org
And remember - if you like them, don’t forget to hit the donate page, y’hear.

How to lock yourself out of Windows Vista
Wednesday, January 17th, 2007Vista’s new User Account Control (UAC) is a great feature that means you don’t need to be logged in as an administrator all the time. If you practice safe computing under Vista, then you should be running a standard user account, with limited security privileges.
If an application needs administrator privileges - to change system settings or install software, for example - Vista will prompt you, like this:

Don’t authorise it and the application will be blocked. The advantage being that if you run a virus by accident it’s limited in what it can do to your machine, since you’re limited in what you can do on the machine.
However, it’s not without its problems - the main one being it’s actually possible (though highly unlikely accidentally) to lock yourself out of the administrator account for your machine. Find out how, after the jump.

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007Last of the CES videos I made for The Register.
Bill Gates didn’t do anything silly this year - probably because he actually had quite a bit to talk about - so they went with a montage of his previous silly bits instead:
CES in five minutes - get an idea of the scale of the show. This is only the Convention Center, mind - there are two other locations as well:
