Ever felt everyone else was a bit backward?

Monday, February 12th, 2007

Very slickly done - especially the shopping and skipping.

Vista ReadyBoost tip: use memory card slots

Friday, February 9th, 2007

Vista has a new feature called ReadyBoost, which allows it to use flash memory - such as a USB memory stick - to speed up performance.

It’s a great idea - but you need to have a flash drive sticking out of your USB port all the time if you want to make use of it.

Another option, if you’ve got a laptop with digital camera card slots is to use those instead. Providing the card is fast enough, you can leave it in all the time and Vista will use it forReadyBoost.

Given the price of memory cards - you can get a 2GB SD card for under a tenner - it’s a cheap way to boost performance.

How to access your files in Vista reduced functionality mode

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

If you don’t activate Vista before the 30 day deadline it will start sulking and only operate in what’s called reduced functionality mode - which basically allows you to open Internet Explorer and buy a licence - there’s no Start menu, so you can’t access any apps, and you can’t open Explorer using the Windows+E key combination.

You can open Explorer through Internet Explorer, though - in the address bar just type: C:\ (or any other valid path) then hit enter. Click Allow to the security message warning you a website is trying to open content on you computer and hey presto - a fully working Explorer window you can use to copy off any files you need.

Time travel at Oxford Circus

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

You can strip back the posters, but at some point you’re going to hit bedrock - presumably around the time that people bought videos, not DVDs, and opening seven days a week was something to shout about.
